📝 Ipsos & Video Games EU Report: In-Game Spending

We dive into the statistics of children's in-game spending and highlight key implications for the world of web3 gaming.

What’s Going On Here?

Ipsos, a well-respected market research company, conducted a comprehensive survey involving over 2,808 parents and guardians across Europe to explore the spending habits of children in gaming. This article delves into the key findings from the survey and their implications for the world of web3 gaming.

What Does This Mean?

The survey uncovers interesting statistics regarding children's in-game spending. It reveals that 76% of parents report their children do not make in-game purchases, emphasizing the significant number of non-paying players. In contrast, 18% of parents confirm that their children do engage in in-game transactions, while 7% are unsure of their children's gaming spending habits.

Importantly, Ipsos notes that gamer parents are increasing their financial commitment to in-game purchases, with an average monthly spend of €39 per child in 2023, representing a €6 increase from 2020. This rise is attributed to inflation within the gaming industry. Furthermore, 64% of children allocate between €1 and €20 per month for in-game purchases.

The survey also highlights that the majority of purchases (34%) are aimed at improving gameplay, indicating the importance of in-game assets and power-ups. Cosmetic purchases closely follow, indicating the enduring appeal of personalized aesthetics in virtual worlds. Interestingly, loot boxes, a contentious subject, do not hold as much interest for children compared to gameplay-enhancing items and cosmetics.

Why Should I Care?

These findings hold significance for the world of web3 gaming for several reasons:

  1. Economic Models: The increase in parental spending on in-game items suggests that web3 gaming platforms can better understand their young audience's needs and preferences. This understanding can help adapt economic models to sustainably monetize the player base.

  2. Game Design and Monetization Strategies: The preference for gameplay-enhancing items underscores the need for web3 gaming developers to create engaging, competitive, and skill-based gameplay elements. This data supports the development of in-game assets and NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that enhance a player's in-game experience.

  3. Digital Ownership: The preference for cosmetics and customization aligns with the core principles of web3 gaming, where players can truly own and customize their in-game assets, supported by blockchain technology.

  4. Parental Involvement: The high percentage of parents monitoring their children's game spending highlights the importance of transparency and safety features in web3 gaming. Implementing parental control options can help gain trust and ensure responsible spending on web3 platforms.

🎙️Conversation of the Week

This week we spoke with Jiho - Co-founder at Sky Mavis and Creator of Axie Infinity to learn more about what it takes to build a game with 100K plus monthly active players.

Axie Infinity Origins is a card-based strategy game where players collect, own, and use Axies to battle. It introduces a real-time combat system, free starter Axies, and vertical progression through Rune & Charm crafting.

What You Need to Know About Axie Origins:

  • Game Evolution: Axie Infinity, developed by Vietnamese studio Sky Mavis, started as an idle card battle game in 2018. It has since evolved, with the introduction of "Axie Infinity: Origins," addressing barriers of entry and enhancing gameplay.

  • Axie Origins Features: This version introduces a real-time combat system, free starter Axies, and progression through Rune & Charm crafting. The game's dynamics include sequential turns for faster gameplay, energy/card resets for aggressive play-styles, and power-ups for progression.

  • Land Gameplay: Lunacia, the Axie homeland, is divided into tokenized plots. Players can upgrade plots, gather resources, engage in real-time PvE battles against monsters called Chimera, and focus on simulation, management, and strategic gameplay.

Despite the traction and track record, many rush to claim “Axie Infinity is dead” citing token performance and unsustainable tokenomics as main flaws. We sat down with the founder to get a glimpse at the bigger Ronin picture many are missing, their approach to the Axie IP, and the unquestionable influence the Axie brand holds on the web3 gaming industry until today.
