đź’€ Ubisoft Announces First Web3 Native Game

Ubisoft's made headlines this week with the announcement of their newest web3 native title Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. Yes, that Ubisoft.

What’s Going On Here?

Champions Tactics™ Grimoria Chronicles is a brand new PVP Tactical RPG experimental game on PC currently in development at Ubisoft. Not much information is currently available online besides the following “Assemble a team of mythical Champions, engage in thrilling tactical battles against other players, and discover the legends of the dark and mystical world of Grimoria”.

From early web3 experiments like the introduction of NFT-based items in Ghost Recon Breakpoint and the launch of One Shot League, to more recent efforts like Assassin’s Creed Smart Collectibles, Ubisoft has been testing the blockchain gaming waters and appears to have now found the conviction to take an extra step.

What Does This Mean?

Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, as a web3 game title, will essentially incorporate web3 elements to offer a complete gaming experience leveraging the potential of blockchain technology (namely partnering with the Oasys chain) to improve the overall gaming experience with a planned free drop at launch.

Why Should I Care?

If the title is successful, it could serve as a blueprint for more developers looking to integrate blockchain technology into their games, potentially leading to increased and fast-tracked adoption of web3 tech in the gaming industry.

The involvement of a major game publisher like Ubisoft in web3 gaming brings credibility to blockchain technology's role in the industry. If successful, other major studios such as Square Enix, Sega, and Bandai Namco, who've already shown interest in blockchain gaming, might follow suit - leading to a broader and quicker adoption of web3 technologies in gaming and potentially silencing critics and skeptics. For now, only time can tell.
