📝 Indie Games on Steam Make Up 48% of Revenue
An in-depth look at the performance of indie games on live streaming platforms, their competition with AAA titles, and the key genres and strategies driving their success.
What’s Going On Here?
Indie games now represent 48% of total revenue on Steam and made up 99% of all new releases in 2024. A growing segment—dubbed Triple I Indies—is driving much of this revenue by operating with near-AAA budgets but without traditional publisher backing. On live streaming platforms, indie games have also gained traction, accounting for 10.3% of hours watched among the top 500 games in early 2025, although sustaining that visibility remains difficult.
What Does This Mean?
The indie gaming scene is evolving from small-scale passion projects to professional, mid-sized studios with commercial ambitions. Streaming has become a vital discovery tool for indie titles, especially in genres like co-op, horror, and survival that thrive on shared gameplay and unpredictability. However, discoverability remains a challenge, with only 9% of indie titles exceeding 5 million watch hours in their first month—compared to 33% of AAA games. Many titles experience short-lived popularity spikes, especially when larger studios mimic successful formats.
Why Should I Care?
For developers, this means that genre choice, influencer marketing, and community-driven promotion are more important than ever. For players, it signals a broader shift in the market where innovative, lower-budget games are becoming just as influential as major franchises. For streamers and content creators, indie games offer fresh, viral-ready experiences that can distinguish their channels. If you're building or supporting an indie title, aligning with the right creators and understanding the dynamics of streaming can make or break your game’s visibility and lifespan.

✍️ Reviews of the Week
Step into an intense battlefield of a fast-paced FPS followed by a nostalgic charm of classic 2D MMORPG in our two featured reviews:
Shatterline is an ambitious FPS that blends the intensity of roguelike PvE with fast-paced PvP, offering something unique for players looking for a fresh experience. While the game currently faces challenges, such as occasional bugs, cross-region latency, and a relatively small player base, it’s a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by more gamers. |
MapleStory N truly feels like a blast from the past, bringing back the nostalgic charm of classic 2D MMORPG gameplay while weaving in modern web3 integration. Sure, there are some areas that could use improvements, like onboarding accessibility and loot collection mechanics, but the game’s strengths shine through. |
